Wrapping header with Thermo TEC

Awhile back I heard a rumor that wrapping your ceramic or SS header will cause your header to crack prematurally. Is this true?

Yes.

This is only good if you're wrapping headers before a turbo or are really, really competitive in road racing and don't mind replacing headers often.

mine have been wrapped for a while. so far no signs of cracking. keeping the wrap away from the welds seems to be the general consensus.

hey greg, who's headers have you personally seen crack?

No personal experience. That just seems to be the consensus of every thing I've ever heard or read about header wraps.

(Actually, let me correct myself: I'm thinking of oxidation not cracking. My apologies.)

Did you dyno before and after the wrap?

What about those "high velocity exhaust jackets"? They're like socks that fit over your header. Nice thing about these is that you don't have to remove the header to put them on. I've seen alot of guys use them on their cars at car shows. Anyone have experience with them?

yeah I bought those $^$&%$ things initially. Wasn't able to get them on without taking off the headers. I might have been able to get them on by taking off the headers.

I don't remeber what happened, I got pissed or something and just ended up getting the wrap. it was a while ago. also, they would look pretty lame, but thats personal preferaence of course. just don't think it will be easy to put them on properly with the headers still on the car.

Geez.. how long does it take to remove the header?? Takes me about 5 min once the car is jacked up. You must not have a dc 4-2-1

ah yeah I know it doesn't take long. well, I have a 1piece RSR, so its not quite as easy. Its just annoying when they say you can put it on without taking the headers off then you find out the truth.

honestly though, at the time (couple years back) I had just started modifying my car so it was a bigger deal then.

Man I would stay clear of the header wraps if possible. They hold moisture which in turn can and will ruin your header.

If this is a race only vehicle then by all means, but for daily driver not recommended. Just remember, the heat that the header is creating is now being held in by the wraps.......causing more stress on the part. Think about this, whats keeping down the temp on the inside of the header......NADA!!!!
